Reports to: UK HR Manager

Overview of the Role

This Senior HR Adviser position will partner the Senior Management teams of manufacturing, supply chain & logistics, supporting approximately 550 employees. This role will involve managing an HR Advisor and will report to the UK HR Manager. This is a very varied role in a function that gives individuals plenty of autonomy and opportunity.

The role has 3 key elements; firstly, as a business partner providing day to day HR support and advice to your management teams and employees, including change activity, management coaching, leadership development, succession planning, recruitment and employee relations. Secondly, an opportunity to work on ad-hoc HR projects (such as the development and implementation of a ‘Wellness’ policy as well as Leadership & Management Development projects). Thirdly, chairing the Industrial Relations committee and acting as ‘lead’ on the development of IR processes and practices including a new labour relations strategy.

You will ideally be a Graduate who is either part or fully CIPD qualified and you should be able to demonstrate substantial experience in a Unionised business such as manufacturing or logistics. You must have experience of working with unions on a day to day basis as well as exposure to change and will have had significant involvement in business and HR project work to deliver business goals. Additionally, the knowledge, confidence and gravitas to influence and coach managers on all aspects of managing their people will be essential.

Job Specification

Job Purpose


To support customer groups on HR issues including guidance and management of training/development, resourcing, reward and employee relations.

Principal Accountabilities


  • Ensure that employees in the customer areas are motivated, recognised and rewarded for their contributions to the business.
  • Communication of management objectives and aspirations as well as individual changes to terms and conditions
  • Advise on how to predict future manning requirements and utilisation, including organisational development and succession planning
  • Ensure that managers are effectively performance managing their employees, by advising on procedure and developing manager’s skills.
  • Advise managers on employee relations issues, including disciplinary and grievance processes, and contribute to the resolution of any issues.
  • Expert understanding of employment law and application within a business environment.
  • Manage all recruitment campaigns in each customer area, including assistance with selection, creating internal adverts and selecting methods of recruitment.
  • Ensure all new employees are inducted effectively into the business area
  • Establishing training needs for each customer area and ensuring that training plan is delivered, either through external training source, or through internal delivery.
  • Proactively lead mid size projects, and will manage HR Administrators and/or HR Advisor
  • Designing appropriate training courses where necessary within the HR team, and delivering to appropriate audience.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Educated to graduate level, with CIPD qualification, or studying towards it.
  • Extensive experience in a HR role gained within Manufacturing or Warehousing/Distribution
  • Experience of working with Unions on a daily basis and developing strong working relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills, influencing senior managers within the business
  • Must be able to work on own initiative and be comfortable with autonomous management style.
  • Personal organisation and effective time/workload management is essential for this versatile role
  • Strong interpersonal skills combined with an empathy for "day to day" issues
  • A creative approach combined with a commitment to succeed in all aspects of the role
  • A flexible approach to working hours is required

The role of the Senior HR Advisor is to work with managers achieve maximum efficiency from the employees by ensuring they are motivated, recognised and rewarded for their contributions to the business.

Key Relationships


Key relationships will be formed and developed with internal managers
The Senior HR Advisor, Cheltenham Operations will have direct line reporting responsibility for the HR Advisor covering Electrics manufacturing. This responsibility will include individual development, day to day advice, objective setting and performance review.
Customers are Mixer and Electrics Manufacturing Managers, Production Area Managers and Team Leaders, Supply Chain and Logistics management team

Salary Package

  • Basic c.£32,000 (depending on experience)
  • 25 days hols (3 days saved at Christmas) + Bank Hols
